What you get
- Text in the chatCopy it wherever you need it. Keep chatting to adjust the tone, length, or wording.
How it works
- Give the line item, the period, the budget (or prior period or forecast) and actual figures, and whatever detail you have: units, prices, headcount, or spend by category.
- askROI's Explain budget variances tool breaks the variance into its drivers in the chat, builds a text waterfall and bridge table that reconcile to the total, and writes a short narrative for each material variance.
- Paste the commentary into your monthly report or board deck, or keep chatting to test another driver or tighten the wording.
What people use it for
- Revenuesplit a miss or a beat into price, volume, and mix effects.
- Payroll and people costsseparate headcount, pay rate, mix, hiring timing, and attrition.
- Operating expensesgroup spend into headcount, volume, discretionary, fixed, one-time, and timing drivers.
- Leadership commentarytwo to four sentence explanations that name the driver, quantify it, and state the outlook and action.
- Forecast accuracycompare budget, forecast, and actual, and measure how far forecasts were off.
Questions
- What does a variance narrative look like?
- Each one states the line item, whether the variance is favorable or unfavorable, the dollar and percent amount, the main driver with numbers behind it, an outlook (one-time, continuing, improving, or deteriorating), and an action. It avoids circular or vague explanations like "revenue was higher due to higher revenue".
- Can it make a waterfall chart?
- It builds the waterfall as text: the starting value, each driver with its signed amount, and the ending value, plus a bridge table with each driver's share of the total. It checks that the drivers add up to the total variance.
- How does it decide which variances to explain?
- It uses materiality thresholds by comparison type, such as 10% for actual vs budget and 5% for actual vs forecast, with a dollar threshold you set for your company's size. When several variances qualify, it starts with the largest dollar impact.
- How is this different from the AI Financial Statement Generator?
- The statement generator builds the full income statement and flags which lines moved. This tool takes one variance, or a few, and explains why it happened.
- What does it not do?
- It does not pull numbers from your systems or give financial advice, and it cannot confirm a business reason you do not give it. Share what drove the change and it quantifies and writes it up; a qualified finance professional should review the analysis before it goes into reporting.
